Persistent Persecution

This is a sickening news story : “Spanish Court Seeks Arrest of U.S. Soldiers in Hotel Attack.” The National Court of Spain has issued an “international arrest warrant” for American soldiers who were involved in the Palestine Hotel incident in Baghdad in 2003: On the morning of July 29, Spain’s National Court announced that it has re-issued an international arrest warrant against three U.S. soldiers it implicates in an attack on Baghdad’s Hotel Palestine, where Rodriguez and Couso, along with dozens of other journalists, were based during the Iraq war. …

CNN’s Larry King Still Doesn’t Understand Arizona’s Immigration Law

CNN’s Larry King Still Doesn’t Understand Arizona’s Immigration Law

It’s been more than three months since Governor Jan Brewer (R-Ariz.) signed SB-1070 into law, but Larry King continues to misrepresent both the spirit and letter of the popular anti-illegal immigration measure. On his eponymous program yesterday, the CNN host asked a guest if the law codifies racial profiling and empowers police officers to arbitrarily question and detain those suspected of being in the country illegally. “One of the things in this law that’s puzzling that [Judge Susan Bolton] pointed out is – and a police officer was on a recent show discussing it – you can just…

CBS: Ruling on Arizona Law ‘Seemed to Answer the Prayers’ of Immigrants

CBS: Ruling on Arizona Law ‘Seemed to Answer the Prayers’ of Immigrants

On Thursday’s Early Show, correspondent John Blackstone reported on a federal judge blocking several provisions in Arizona’s new immigration law: “The judge’s ruling seemed to answer the prayers of many in Arizona’s immigrant communities.” Footage of two women crying and praying at a protest against the law followed his declaration. Blackstone began his report by noting that protestors “are already beginning to gather for more protests today against Arizona’s new law. They know that even with the court ruling yesterday…there will be an appeal, that their battle is not over.” During the segment, the headline on screen read: “Border Battle; Judge Blocks …

Arizona Ruling (At Urging of Obama Administration) Undermines “Deport the Criminals First”

Arizona Ruling (At Urging of Obama Administration) Undermines “Deport the Criminals First”

On this blog I have had a recurring series called “Deport the Criminals First.” The idea is that, unless you are in favor of a complete open border policy, you would want to see the most undesirable illegal immigrants deported first: criminals, starting with violent criminals. I have therefore advocated checking the immigration status of every person arrested for a crime, especially violent crimes, and ensuring that we have sufficient resources to identify and deport violent criminals once they have served their sentences. I see this as a completely noncontroversial and bipartisan proposal. I have repeatedly highlighted the tragic and often fatal consequences that visit victims …

Re: The Arizona Injunction — By: NRO Staff

The decision in U.S. v. Arizona finds several provisions of Arizona law preempted, mainly on the ground that they interfere with federal policy. It’s hard to be too critical of a judge who comes to that conclusion when the very agencies charged with making federal policy insist at the top of their lungs that state law is interfering with their policy. That said, the decision has to make some heroic assumptions to find an interference with federal policy. For example, two provisions of the law required local police to check the immigration status of people…

Important Case on Public Universities’ Charging Speakers Security Fees (Especially in Anticipation of Possible Hostile Reaction by the Audience)

(Eugene Volokh) From Sonnier v. Crain (5th Cir. July 27) : Sonnier argues … that SLU’s speech policy violates the First Amendment because it gives the University the “sole discretion … in determining both the need for, and the strength of the security” at the public assembly or demonstration, and assesses the cost of additional security on the sponsoring individual or organization. In response, the defendants assert …

Key Republican Warns Kagan Is ‘Dangerous’

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan picked up more GOP backing Wednesday in her drive toward near-certain confirmation next week, even as a top Republican lashed out at her as “dangerous.”

Arizona Immigration Decision — By: Andy McCarthy

Arizona Immigration Decision — By: Andy McCarthy

On a quick read, the federal court’s issuance of a temporary injunction against enforcement of the major provisions of the Arizona immigration law appears specious. In essence, Judge Susan Bolton bought the Justice Department’s preemption argument — i.e., the claim that the federal government has broad and exclusive authority to regulate immigration, and therefore that any state measure that is inconsistent with federal law is invalid. The Arizona law is completely consistent with federal law. The judge, however, twisted to concept of federal law into federal enforcement practices (or, as it happens, lack thereof). In effect, the court is saying that if the feds refuse to…

Brent Wilkes, the former defense contractor who was convicted in 2007 of bribing then-Rep. Duke Cunningham, in March raked in $10,900 when he recently won a World Series of Poker tournament at a California casino. Wilkes, a professed poker aficionado, used cards as a way one way to bribe Cunningham, letting the Congressman win at poker, as his nephew testified. He also hosted poker games for lawmakers at the Watergate and other hotels. Now, out on bail pending an appeal of his 12-year sentence, Wilkes is touring the poker circuit. He calls himself “The Enigma,” because, he …
