The Cornhusker Concussive

One of the disgusting features of the Senate’s Obamacare bill is the payoffs extracted from taxpayers and directed to the states of senators wielding key votes. The payoffs culminated in the “Cornhusker Kickback” procured by Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson for Nebraska in order to offset the future costs imposed on Nebraska and other states by the Obamacare bill. The Cornhusker Kickback is now in the sights of various states attorneys general. As Politico explains , under the terms of the deal Nelson cut with Senate leaders to secure his vote, Nebraska is exempted from having to pay for the coverage of its new Medicaid enrollees. Taxpayers pick up the tab, expected to run $100 million over the next 10 years. Only 17% of Nebraskans approve of the bribes Senator Ben Nelson took from Harry Reid so that he would vote to nationalize US health care. Rasmussen reported: The good news for Senator Ben Nelson is that he doesn’t have to face Nebraska voters until 2012. If Governor Dave Heineman challenges Nelson for the Senate job, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows the Republican would get 61% of the vote while Nelson would get just 30%. Nelson was reelected to a second Senate term in 2006 with 64% of the vote.

Yesterday, showing real leadership, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) ground the United States Senate to halt for a brief time, making us wonder why Mitch McConnell had been unable to do that in the past month. DeMint went down to the floor of the Senate and made a motion to suspend the rules of the Senate to allow the insertion of one more amendment into the health care legislation. His amendment? A prohibition on cash for cloture. DeMint’s amendment, which he and Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) had originally co-authored and passed back in 2007 only to see it killed, would prohibit Senators from accepting targeted earmarks for their states in exchange for votes on legislation. This time, Senator Durbin made a motion to table Senator DeMint’s effort, saying he did not understand why Senator DeMint would think an anti-cash for cloture amendment was needed

Does this really surprise anyone? Harry Reid played the class card following the Democrats historic vote to takeover one sixth of the nation’s economy.
