GOP drama in the last frontier : J oe Miller went rogue long before Sarah Palin. Miller, 43, grew up in Kansas, but came to Alaska “by choice” in 1994, after taking a degree from Yale Law School and picking up a Bronze Star in Desert Storm. After a childhood of hunting and fishing, “the can-do attitude, the rough living, the great outdoors — it had a magnetizing pull,” he says. Yet now, instead of trudging…
Who needs a new immigration law? Sheriff Joe’s been booting immigrants out of the country at an astonishing rate for the last three years. Under a government program that allows local law enforcement agencies to deputize officers to work on immigration enforcement, Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Maricopa County office has helped deport or force the departure of 26,146 immigrants since 2007, according to The Associated Press. That’s more than 20 percent of the nationwide total made through the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program. With Arizona’s new immigration law set to take effect tomorrow (though a judge has now blocked the most controversial parts of the law), it’s clear that Sheriff Joe is already ahead of the …
Will Palin’s plug boost Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire? Bedford, N.H. — Kelly Ayotte meets me at Panera Bread, which, a campaign aide confides, is one of her favorite spots. Lodged in the corner of a concrete strip mall south of Manchester, Panera — a corporate chain — is part caf?, part “artisan” bakery, with plush chairs and gourmet grinds. When I arrive, I spot Ayotte in the back, smartly dressed with coffee in hand, milling about, a star among the soccer-mom set that crowds the booths. Ayotte, 42, a former state attorney general, is in the midst of a tight primary campaign. With Sen. Judd Gregg retiring…
Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams’ ‘accidental’ racism continues to have big consequences — the tea party group that he’s long been the public face of is now pretty much disavowing him. Sal Russo, the veteran Republican political consultant who helped found the Tea Party Express, told Politico that Williams “stepped down a month ago and he is not affiliated” with the tea…
From Peggy Noonan : Advice on your visit? Love America. It not only deserves it, at the moment it needs it. Our morale is low. Do you want to help preserve what has been called the Special Relationship? (Actually, I don’t know: do you?) If you do, then when you speak here, speak of your love for this great nation. We don’t, not in a deep way and not enough. Even our President doesn’t. He tries, but he can’t get it right because it’s all so abstract to him. He associates patriotism with nationalism. But patriotism springs from legitimate love and gratitude, nationalism from shallow aggression and conceit. Obama confuses …

&cat=19&pid=74319&cache=true " alt="Its a Consensus: Michael Steele Is Ineffective in Confronting the Socialist Left’s Destruction of America" class="alignleft" />
In tracking the response to the launch of the website and petition to draft Sarah Palin for the Chairmanship of the RNC , we have seen varied reactions ranging from enthusiasm , to curiosity , to skepticism , to racist bigotry , to deafening silence. One common denominator in near uniformity, however, is the consensus that Michael Steele is, at best, ineffective as Chair of the RNC for (but not exclusively) the following reasons. …
[Guest post by DRJ] The 17 Afghans who had gone AWOL from a Texas air force base have almost been located with help from Facebook . Rusty at the JAWA Report has good news and bad news: “Heh. Some of them seemed to have skipped town to live the MTV version of the American dream … in Canada. Others? Not so much.” Read the rest.
American Crossroads, formed by some of the GOP’s biggest names with the aim of helping the party win the 2010 midterms, launched a few months ago with an ambitious $52 million fundraising goal. So how much did the group pull in in May? A whopping $200. According to Politico, the May numbers bring the total raised since March to a little over $1.25 million. After boasting in April that donors had already pledged $30 million to the cause, the money appears to be slow in coming to the 527 group led by Karl Rove, Republican consultant Ed Gillespie and former RNC Chairman Mike Duncan. “We …
A little more background on Sharron Angle … For at least six years in the 1990s before she held statewide elective office, Angle was a member of the little-known Independent American Party, a right-wing party that combines elements of Ron Paul’s doctrinaire libertarianism — pro-gun, anti-tax, anti-bureaucracy, pro-states’ rights — with Christian social conservatism and fear of the “North American Union” and other forms of “global government.” The small
Dozens of financial industry lobbyists have ties to lawmakers serving on the conference committee negotiating financial reform legislation, according to data reported by Public Citizen. Among them are seven former chiefs of staff and a total of 16 former employees of Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL). In addition to the lobbyists with direct…
