Washington Post reporter David Brown found ”rage and panic” at a recent meeting of AIDS activists in Vienna, placed on page A-10 of Thursday’s paper: The rage is directed at the Obama administration , which many activists say is reneging on a commitment to continue big annual increases in global AIDS spending. The panic arises from the knowledge that in some African countries, patients who want antiretroviral treatment are being turned away and will soon start dying. Some activists pine for former president George…
I got a lot of interesting responses to my earlier post about a possible rising tide of Islamophobia. I suggested the possibility that whatever change there may be might be tied to the effects of a decade of war. But I was far more persuaded by several readers who made a political argument, particularly the hand off of power from President Bush to President Obama. TPM Reader CB was one of several making this point … I think there is actually a pretty basic explanation for why the seeming rise in Islamophobia…
Pelosi and the Democrats are going to try to ride fears about a Ryan-style privatization plan for Social Security to victory — or not-so-bad defeat — this November. Reid has already run ads attacking Sharron Angle on Social Security, Talking Points Memo has circulated videos of Rand Paul supporting privatization in old interviews, and a new front group released a poll July 15 showing that Americans don’t like the idea of “reforming” Social Security in order to reduce the deficit. (Note how closely Pelosi’s remarks track this poll.) The more President Bush talked about privatizing Social Security, the less voters liked it. They are not going to like it any more now that the stock …
Retro pop sensation Cyndi Lauper may “just wanna have fun” – but not with the Bush administration, evangelists or the “gullible” American people. The singer slammed George W. Bush as a “criminal,” dismissed evangelism as “bullshit,” and mocked Americans during an interview with Xtra!, Canada’s Gay and Lesbian News on July 20. “The past – this year’s getting a little better, but the past eight years, it was so dark,” said the blonde popstar. “[I]t was…
On its web site , the NAACP promotes its resolution accusing the Tea Party of being racist: The resolution came after a year of high-profile media coverage of attendees of Tea Party marches using vile, antagonistic racial slurs & images. Really? The NAACP’s blog post is accompanied by seven photos, all of which are credited to Think Progress, a far-left web site. These photos evidently comprise the best evidence the NAACP has to support its claims against the Tea Party movement. It is striking how weak that evidence is. Not a single one of the images is clearly racist (even assuming that they all came from Tea Party events; there is no …
CNN.com’s Kristi Keck filed a story on Friday reporting the Republican National Committee started a website mocking President Obama’s series of vacations and other actions during the BP oil spill. The headline was “Obama vacation brings rest, relaxation and rebuke.” The story’s pull quote came from Democratic partisan and CNN regular Paul Begala, who eventually said something incredibly false about…
Political correctness should never trump security and yet, in NATO, it does: NATO Secretary-General Rasmussen has appointed a Turkish diplomat closely allied to Turkey’s pro-Hamas, pro-Iranian president Abdullah Gul to be NATO’s new deputy for planning .?During the Bosnia campaign, certain NATO members? tipped off Serbs about NATO operations.?Given the strategic threats emanating from Turkey’s allies in the Middle East, placing a Turkish official in any sensitive capacity seems a recipe for disaster. It is time to recognize that under the watch of both President Bush and President Obama, Turkey has become more?of an adversary than an ally.
In an aggressive enforcement strategy championed under President Bush, over 4,000 immigration cases are referred to federal prosecutors — the largest number for any two-month stretch since ICE was created. The folks at ABC News are confused. Democrats are passing all this awesome legislation, they posit, so why are Americans acting so hostile and looking to hand Congress to the GOP? The key problems, ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf deduces , are that Democrats simply have not embraced liberalism enough and Americans have failed to perceive just how great the Democratic agenda has been. “The imminent passage of a tough new Wall Street Reform bill,” wrote Wolf, pictured right, on ABC’s website, “will cap off a wildly productive two years for Democrats in Washington – they will have passed two pieces of sweeping legislation and an enormous $800 billion stimulus bill to…
