Yikes! Illinois "Near the Point of Fiscal Disintigration"

We’ve heard a lot over the past few weeks about California being on the precipice of fiscal disaster, but did you know that Illinois is in a similarly catastrophic situation?…

Only Rep. Frank could go kill health care rationing…

Only Rep. Frank could go kill health care rationing…

…and he just did . “I know some of my Democratic colleagues had been thinking about ways to, in effect, get around the results by working in various parliamentary ways, looking at the rules, trying to get a health care bill passed that would have been the same bill that would have passed if [MA AG] Martha Coakley [D] had won, and I think that’s a mistake,” Frank said. “I will not support an effort to push through a House-Senate compromise bill despite an election. I’m disappointed in how it came out, but I think electoral results have to be respected.” And if you’re wondering why Barney Frank did this, it’s because he can read a map . He’s the only member of the MA Congressional delegation whose district went completely for Coakley, and at least two of them are personally sweating the election results right now – so if anybody’s going to be taking the lead in walking back from the precipice, it should be the guy who can take the hit and still be favored to keep his seat in November. Mildly disappointing, from a Republican point of view… but killing this abomination of a health care bill is the best thing for the country , which of course should be our paramount concern. Will This Be Our ‘Lost Decade’? — By: NRO Staff

Will This Be Our ‘Lost Decade’? — By: NRO Staff

The estimated jobs loss of 85,000 in December was more than many economists forecasted but still indicative of a stabilizing job market. Combined with the revision upward of to positive job growth in November, the economy may have troughed. The real danger now is avoiding a “lost decade” similar to what Japan experienced in the 1990s and early 2000s. Indeed, Japan’s spending spree on its failed attempts to use fiscal policy to foster job growth put the nation on the precipice of public-debt default.   Unfortunately, policymakers inside the beltway in Washington, D.C., still think it’s government that needs to lead the economy out of the recession. In truth, it will be private investment in long-term wealth creation that will be the key to sustained recovery. The best approach for the U.S. government is to let the economy works its own way out of the recession by holding off on more regulation, bringing the deficit under control through a strategic reduction in spending, and avoiding grand new government jobs schemes that simply add uncertainty to the economy.

“Obama told us we were on the precipice. That seemed rather, well, scary. People fall off such things and sometimes die. Then we heard that health care had to pass now — or never. No president will ever try this again, although Obama did so after Bill Clinton failed. Now Obama says we have to pass it or go bankrupt

‘Precipice’! — By: Jay Nordlinger

USA Today : “President Obama, surrounded by Senate Democratic leaders, said today ‘we are on the precipice’ of major health care reform, though ‘there are still some differences that have to be worked on.’” Precipice – is that the word he wanted? In any case, seems like the mot juste to me.
