The Delaware conundrum

The Delaware conundrum

The stakes are high in the Delaware Senate race to serve out Joe Biden’s term where the victor will be eligible to serve upon election and thus will participate in the lame duck session. The choice for Republican voters, between Rep. Mike Castle and insurgent candidate Christie O’Donnell, presents a conundrum for conservatives. Castle is an immensely popular figure in Delaware. In 2008, when Barack Obama carried the state by a margin of 62-37, Castle defeated his Democratic opponent by a margin of 61-38, in a state-wide race (Delaware has just one seat in the House). Meanwhile, O’Donnell was losing to Joe Biden by a margin of 65-35. Castle’s popularity in Delaware probably rivals that…

Despite reports of a deal, the House ethics panel just began its first public meeting on the charges against Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY). And for the first time, we’re hearing the charges. The panel is charging Rangel with 13 violations. They fall into four groups: One, violations regarding fundraising Rangel did for a City College educational center named after him. Two, errors Rangel made on his financial disclosure forms. Three, inappropriate use of his rent-subsidized apartments in Harlem. Four, his failure to report taxable income with regards to…

Life Insurers Profit By Withholding Cash From Military Families: Bloomberg

Life Insurers Profit By Withholding Cash From Military Families: Bloomberg

Life insurers — including Prudential, which provides life insurance for the Department of Veterans Affairs — keep payouts to families in their own corporate accounts, earning more interest on the money than they give to the beneficiaries. Bloomberg reports that many life insurance companies send beneficiaries a “checkbook” when they opt to get their money in a lump sum. The companies assure families that the money is safe

Bought and Paid For Gov. Finds Doing Right Thing Hard

-By Warner Todd Huston The unions in New York have the idea that they own state government. It’s not too easy to deny their claim seeing as how unions (all of them) have been paying the bills and filling the pockets of ruling Democrats for decades now. But Accidental Governor of New York David Paterson is finding himself in a quandary, one that more and …

Summer Re-Runs — By: Stephen Spruiell

Summer Re-Runs — By: Stephen Spruiell

The New York Times highlights a new study by Alan Blinder and Mark Zandi on the effects of government policy on the recession: In a new paper, the economists argue that without the Wall Street bailout, the bank stress tests , the emergency lending and asset purchases by the Federal Reserve , and the Obama administration’s fiscal stimulus program, the nation’s gross domestic product would be about 6.5 percent lower this year. This is kind of like saying that without China, India, and Bulgaria, the world would have 2.4 billion fewer people. The Times is good enough to acknowledge as much: But the new analysis might not be of immediate solace to officials in the Obama administration, who have been trying to…

Rep Paul Ryan: By Every Objective Measure The Stimulus Has Failed (Video)

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) recently spoke out against the failed Obama-Pelosi Stimulus Plan at the House Budget Committee Hearing. It was another excellent speech by this bright young conservative star: Rep. Ryan on the failed Stimulus Plan: Over a year ago, Congress enacted a stimulus bill that spread huge spending increases across the government. By every objective measure – from jobs and economic growth to the rising price tag – the stimulus has failed. It has failed to create the jobs promised. Rather than “save or create” 3 to 4 million jobs, the economy…

CNN Money Covers for Democrat Obstructionists After Bashing GOP

If a congressional Democrat blocks economic relief efforts, and no one bothers to report it, does it really happen? The editors at CNNMoney.com are apparently on a quest to find the answer. After weeks of pounding Republicans for stalling unemployment benefits in the Senate, the site is suddenly disinterested in doing the same to Democrats. The political battle du jour? Republicans and moderate Democrats want to continue tax cuts set to expire across the board. Liberals want to preserve the cuts for lower-income families…

Another Obama supporter finds “disappointment”

I think we could probably make this a regular feature on Q&O – this week’s Obama supporter who finds that he who was wrapped in all the hype of the presidential campaign was mostly an empty suit. This week it is the editorial board of the Denver Post – who admits to endorsing Mr. Obama in 2008 because they thought his ideas for recovery from the financial crisis were better…

I think we could probably make this a regular feature on Q&O – this week’s Obama supporter who finds that he who was wrapped in all the hype of the presidential campaign was mostly an empty suit. This week it is the editorial board of the Denver Post – who admits to endorsing Mr. Obama in 2008 because they thought his ideas for recovery from the financial crisis were better than McCain’s.? But we also hoped he would restore the nation’s reputation with the rest of the world. But instead of being vilified, as we were under Bush, the United States …
