From today’s New York Times : ALBANY — As Gov. David A. Paterson calls lawmakers back to work on the budget this week, he has announced that the fiscal situation is so serious that he must begin laying off state workers. But there is one wrinkle, as officials try to pare government spending: No one knows for sure how big the state work force actually is . . . . . . . Much is not known about the sprawling system of public authorities, which number in the hundreds. Legislation last year forced …

I really want to like this guy Guinta; if he clears the primary I’m going to have to vote for him. It’s getting harder rather than easier though, because he seems far too adept at blaming everyone else but himself for his troubles. This is not a good sign. I wrote in this space recently about my concerns with Guinta’s position on the Stimulus bill . His fans supporters and minions took me to task on the credibility of both my claims and my sources, and that’s ok – this is a blood sport after all. But in my follow-…
The White House spent yesterday crowing about how many jobs they “saved or created” at a time when they are managing an economy with almost 10% unemployment and destroying jobs in the Gulf of Mexico by banning drilling for 6 months. The AP reports, “Obama has traveled the country telling voters that as bad as things are, they’d be worse without the stimulus. He acknowledges that message…
Great rant in the Las Vegas Review Journal by Wayne Allyn Root in which he points out the obvious – President Obama wouldn’t know how to create a job if his life depended on it.? However, it appears he certainly knows how to kill any incentives to create jobs.? Key graf: I’ve polled all my friends who own small businesses — many of them in the Internet and high-tech fields. They all agree that in this new Obama world of high business taxes, income …
Unexpectedly for whom? If anyone has been out and about in this economy, they don’t find the numbers “unexpected” at all: Claims increased 13,000, to 472,000, while forecasters expected a slight drop to about 455,000 from the previous week’s seasonally adjusted 457,000, according to Labor Department figures released Thursday. Not good.? The Hill tries to put lipstick on this pig: The four-week moving average, which smoothes out the volatility of the weekly number and is a better look at the employment picture, increased 3,250, to 466,500, from the previous week’s revised average of 463,250, the highest in almost three months. But the fact of the matter is 3,250 jobs in a month isn’t even a good statistical …
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Employment fell for the first this year in June as thousands of temporary census jobs ended and private hiring grew less than expected, dealing a blow to President Barack Obama who has identified job creation as a key priority.

Again. # RT @ markknoller : Obama: Debate isn’t about big or small government, but responsible government.” | “Responsible”? *cough* oil spill *cough* # RT @ markknoller : Obama: There are times when “only government” can do what individuals and business cannot. | By “times” he means “always”. # I just learned that Swedish Match has discontinued Claq…
A group of senators sent a letter to the president this week to warn him against something that’s apparently being tossed around inside the administration: granting an amnesty unilaterally, without input from Congress. Apparently, this plan would apply only to visa overstayers and other illegals who’ve applied for green cards as a delaying tactic knowing they won’t qualify — but that would mean maybe 5 million people. “Deferred action” and “parole” aren’t the same as green cards and so don’t lead to citizenship, …
I had summer jobs from the age of 14 on. I think it’s a huge part of growing up. Sorry to see it’s going the way of the dodo. From my friend Katrina Trinko in USA Today : In 2000, the teenage landscape was a different place. Destiny’s Child and ‘N Sync topped the music charts, Survivor popularized the new “reality TV” genre and…
It seems that when they saw today’s today’s disappointing unemployment claims report from Uncle Sam, the Associated Press’s Alan Zibel, perhaps with the help of contributors Jeannine Aversa, Martin Crutsinger, and Tali Arbel, decided to start playing the expectations game with June’s Employment Situation Report, which isn’t due to arrive from the Bureau of Labor Statistics until July 2. If so, from a propagandist’s perspective, it’s a pretty slick strategy, given that the BLS’s report will probably be the last significant piece of economic news before the July 4 weekend, making it a larger than usual…
